[K-Biz Report] The Future of Korean Industry: How ‘AI’ and ‘Exports’ Will Transform 2026

Today, I am analyzing the latest '2025-2026 Major Task Plan' and the 'AI Autonomous Manufacturing Strategy' announced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) of South Korea. Beyond simple crisis management, the South Korean government is signaling a powerful commitment to fundamentally restructuring the industry through 'AI Transformation (AX)'.

Here are the three core themes that will redefine the business landscape.

1. Building an Unprecedented ‘Export Defense Line’ (Trust & Growth)

To counter global trade uncertainties, the government has introduced record-breaking financial support measures.

  • 252 Trillion KRW in Trade Insurance: The government will supply the largest-ever amount of trade insurance to ensure export companies remain resilient against external variables.
  • Exchange Rate Insurance & Logistics Support: By providing 1.5 trillion KRW in exchange rate insurance and significantly lowering insurance premiums, the government is reducing the cost burden on small and medium-sized exporters.
  • Cross-Departmental Export Support: A ‘Triple-Hurdle Relief’ package—covering overseas certification, market development, and logistics costs—aims to resolve practical on-site difficulties.

2. Accelerating Industrial AX: ‘Autonomous Manufacturing’ & ‘AI in Retail’ (Innovation)

The government defines AI not just as a tool, but as a ‘Game Changer’ for industry. I am particularly paying attention to the accelerated convergence of distribution and manufacturing.

  • AI Autonomous Manufacturing 1.0: The goal is to increase the adoption rate of AI autonomous manufacturing from the current 9% to over 30% by 2030, while boosting manufacturing productivity by more than 20%.
  • 10 Lead Projects: Production process innovations combining AI and robotics will be implemented in key industries such as semiconductors, automobiles, shipbuilding, and secondary batteries.
  • AI Strategy in Distribution: By fully introducing AI into five key areas—productization, marketing, logistics, and delivery—Korea aims to build an ecosystem that maximizes e-commerce competitiveness.

3. Maintaining a ‘Super-Gap’ in Advanced Industries (Technology)

Strong legal and institutional frameworks are being established to secure dominance in the global technology hegemony race.

  • Enactment of the Semiconductor Act: To maintain a ‘Super-Gap’ in semiconductors, the government will enact a specific act and focus investments on On-Device AI semiconductors.
  • Energy Security & New Industries: By completing the main contract for the Czech nuclear power plant and developing deep-sea gas fields in the East Sea, Korea is strengthening its energy infrastructure.
  • Mobility & Secondary Batteries: Separate measures will be established to enhance the competitiveness of eco-friendly vehicles and secondary batteries to overcome the ‘EV Chasm’.

Key Insight: Shifts We Must Watch

The future of Korean industry, as seen through this announcement, is a transition toward ‘Intelligent Self-Reliant Industry’.

  1. From Labor-Intensive to Intelligence-Intensive: AI autonomous manufacturing is now a necessity, not an option, to solve challenges like demographic shifts and declining productivity. Companies must move beyond process efficiency and establish ‘Data-Driven Decision-Making Systems’.
  2. Blurred Boundaries Between Retail and Manufacturing: The AI retail strategy will not just automate logistics; it will accelerate the era of ‘Demand-Responsive Production’ where customer data is reflected in manufacturing in real-time.
  3. Global Trade Risk as a Constant: These massive export support measures indicate the instability of the external environment. Strategic financial risk management through trade insurance is now essential.
Now that we have mapped out the overall industrial landscape of South Korea, it is time to zoom in on the 'Retail' sector, where the most immediate and tangible impact will be felt.
